2012-12-26 “withstand … stand”

withstand … stand

Ephesians 6:13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

the evil day” is when “the wiles (deceitful lies and tricks) of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11) are venomously brought to bear upon the Church and all who would worshipfully live in obedience to the Lord. “the devil” launches his attacks through “principalities”, “powers”, “rulers of the darkness of this world”, and “spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12); that is, he uses government officials, influential people, and those who are in positions of power. These minions of “the devil” are motivated and guided by “the darkness of this world” and “spiritual wickedness”; that is, their motives and devices are exceedingly evil. They hatefully oppose Christ, His Word, and His Church. John refers to them as “antichrists” (I John 2:18); that is, those who fight against Christ in this present world. We must never let our guard down, for our “adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (I Peter 5:8). It is therefore necessary for the Children of God to put on “the whole armour of God” so that we “may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand”. To “withstand” is to have the spiritual weapons and strength to endure the devil’s venomous attacks. To “stand” is to successfully defend our position; that is, to be so well experienced in the use of the “armour of God” that no matter what “the devil” throws at us, we can hold our position.
