2012-12-20 “overwhelmed”

Psalm 61:2From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

The Psalmist, faced great trials in his day, so great were his trials that his “heart” would become “overwhelmed”. When a boat becomes so full of water that it can no longer float, it is said to be “overwhelmed”. Like the Psalmist, there are times in this life when our “heart” becomes so “overwhelmed” with grief, sadness, fear, hurt, loneliness, discouragements, doubt, sin, and the magnitude of our duties that we may cry out, “Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?” (Psalm 77:8). But, even in his “overwhelmed” state, the Psalmist had the answer! He pleaded, “lead me to the rock that is higher than I”. Even so with us, when we are “overwhelmed”, “the rock that is higher than I” is where we find refuge, comfort, strength, love, and we find that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1). Let us flee to our Lord, “the rock that is higher than I”; for, “the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake”!
